When couples ask where to hold a low-key celebration, our first answer is usually the BESPOKE and Hearthside pair on Haddon Ave in Collingswood. BESPOKE Home + Life is an independently owned plant and home decor shop that offers buyouts of its private courtyard, capped at 30 guests and already full of plant magic. Guests then walk down the street to Hearthside BYOB for a family-style dinner reception.

Osteria in Philadelphia is the other one we recommend constantly. It does not take a heavy hand or a huge floral budget to turn its glass-enclosed patio and greenhouse into something romantic. The space is cozy, so rather than clog the walkway with a traditional arch we frame the ceremony with a pair of tall gold Harlow stands, then pop the compotes off the stands afterwards and move them to the dessert table. The cake can sit between the stands once the ceremony is over.

Martha, a small bar in Kensington with an enclosed garden and a partly covered patio, is another we have flowered more than once, and that cover means the weather is less of a gamble. The Factory Workers in Collingswood and Southwark in Philadelphia round out the short list.

A smaller guest count usually means fewer, better placed pieces rather than a thinner version of a big wedding: personal flowers, one ceremony moment, a welcome arrangement, and simple table flowers with tapers. Work out where the photographs are going to happen and put the flowers there. That single decision does more for a tight budget than anything else.

South Stems is an event and corporate floral studio. We do not offer retail arrangements, same-day gift delivery or walk-in service.

Questions we get asked

How small is a micro wedding?

There is no fixed number. In practice ours tend to be restaurant, courtyard and greenhouse buyouts. The BESPOKE courtyard in Collingswood, for example, caps at 30 guests.

Can our ceremony flowers be reused at the reception?

Often, and it is worth planning for. At Osteria we pop the compotes off the ceremony stands and move them to the dessert table. Elsewhere we have moved a whole ceremony design to sit in front of the sweetheart table once the ceremony is over.

Let’s start planning.
